Using the vietnamization template, let's take 2 years as the time to beat post withdrawal of UK, US, Canadian, Australian and Danish combat forces. I'll be surprised if Karzai lasts those two years, but I'm prepared to be surprised. I certainly was surprised that Najibullah lasted as long as he did. I don't claim any gift of prophecy.

Is it as good now as it's going to get? Interesting thought. Want to write a guest blog post, Paul?

What makes you so sure the current Afghan govt will not last past a Western withdrawal? Everyone that Najibullah's govt would fall shortly after the Soviets left, but look what happened -- he held on until the USSR itself collapsed (and thus stopped sending aid). I would argue that Karzai's govt is at least as solid as Najib's, more so.
I quite agree, however, that the strategy is to declare victory and leave just as soon as we're reasonably confident that disaster won't follow our departure. But swimming somewhat against the tide of current opinion, I would suggest that we're more-or-less at that point now. A phased withdrawal over the next 18 months or so is thus a reasonably prudent strategy, I would argue.

Morale courage, or moral courage? Not certain.
